ECI Benelux Dinner Lecture

Date: Thursday 21 September 2006
Venue: Delft University of Technology

Speaker:
Prof. dr Hennes de Ridder

The Living Building Concept is a framework wherein value is as significant as the cost of a construction work. It takes account of the value and the cost of a construction work for all stakeholders during its entire life cycle, instead of just cost at the time of project delivery. Value and cost need to be managed and controlled in a dynamic fashion during the entire life cycle. This approach has widespread consequences for the relationships between stakeholders, the methods of tendering, assignment of tasks and sharing of responsibilities and risks. The ‘Living Building’ concept provides a consistent and coherent way for stakeholders to collaborate in order to increase the benefit for the entire demand chain from users to society as a whole as well as profit for the various players in the supply chain. During the Dinner Lecture not only the theoretical basis of the Living Building Concept will be presented but also the practical implications will be outlined , illustrated with a range of examples.

Prof. Hennes de Ridder, Operations Director of ECI Benelux, is head of the section Design and Construction Processes at the Delft University of Technology, as well as executive director of De Ridder Consult. His specialisations are hydraulic engineering, risk management and systems engineering. For 25 years he worked at HBG, in particular on large civil engineering projects such as the Storm Surge Barrier in the Eastern Schelde, Lac du Nord Tunis, Ekofisk Protective Barrier and the Storm Surge Barrier Rotterdam.

3. ECI Master Classes 2006

Risk Analysis and Management
Date: Tuesday 19 September
Venue: Holiday Inn Leeds/Bradford Airport, Leeds
Tutor: Steve Simister, Oxford Management & Research Ltd

The management of risk is inherent to both project and contract managers. It is inherent to project management because projects, being unique, novel and transient, are uncertain and hence risky. It is inherent to contracts because one of the functions of contracts is to share this risk between the parties involved in a project. By the end of the programme the participants will be able to:

  • Describe principles of managing risk, and give examples of standard risk management processes
  • Appreciate the psychology of risk
  • Explain tools and techniques for the qualitative management of risk, linked to standard risk management processes
  • Apply quantitative techniques for risk analysis, including three point estimating and Monte Carlo simulation.

Project Development and Definition

Date: Tuesday 03 October
Venue: Manchester Airport
Tutor: Chris Fox, Project Management Consultant

Many studies have been carried out investigating why some projects experience major difficulties and in some cases fail completely. These studies have covered many different types of projects in different business sectors and yet one of the main conclusions repeatedly identified failure in various aspects of the project development work. It is clear that quality of project development and definition is a key factor in determining project outcome and that it is in the development phase that the majority of the key strategy decisions are (or should be) taken. The objectives of this Master Class will be to:
  • Highlight how project development has a major influence upon project implementation and project outcome.
  • Identify key requirements for the development of engineering projects.
  • Propose appropriate methodologies for optimal development of projects.
  • Highlight the key roles of the Project Manager and his team in the development phase.
  • Identify requirements for input and support from the project owner and other stakeholders.
  • Encourage cross fertilization of ideas and experience by ensuring that the session is interactive.

Project development and definition handbook

This ECI manual, written by Chris Fox, will be an essential tool for clients, contractors, advisers and suppliers.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.

ECI Pricing system for piping works - version 2
ISBN 1 873844 60 3

Since the initial publication in 2002, a number of owners, EPC contractors and construction contractors in our industry have applied the ECI Pricing System for Piping Works successfully on different types of project at various locations. Their contribution in providing comments and suggested improvements is highly appreciated and enabled the ECI Benelux Subcontracting Task Force to prepare this 'Revision 2005' of the system. In addition, a number of modifications were required to better support further automation of the execution work processes that interface with the system.

The system provides a structured approach designed to reduce bidding costs for owners and contractors alike, it includes a spreadsheet with multipliers on a CD-ROM, not a ready-made software package, but simple enough to integrate into any company's existing software.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.

A full list of publications available to purchase from ECI can be found on the publications page of the ECI website or contact Anu Khandelwal at the ECI office.
