Managing the Skills Gap and Multicultural Project Teams Workshop
Date: Wednesday 22 November 2006
Venue: London
Over the last few years, there has been a change in the way many major industrial capital projects are executed. This is especially apparent in Western Europe where levels of investment have dropped and most project management contractors are working on projects in other parts of the world. The growth and development of rapid worldwide electronic communications has led to many projects being designed and developed in locations many thousands of miles away from the actual construction sites. In addition, there has been a trend by owner operators to develop and establish such projects in partnership with other companies as joint ventures, often collaborating with local companies in the territory where the assets will be built. This has led to the rise of multicultural project teams, widely separated by geography the
team members from different cultures and backgrounds working together to achieve a common objective.
Furthermore, the shortage of project skills in UK and Western Europe has led to the use of multicultural teams in local projects.
This one day workshop, which replaces the postponed UK workshop from June this year, is intended to build upon work done in 2004 on this topic in an ECI workshop in Haarlem. The workshop will also seek to address some of the issues raised above. One purpose of the workshop will examine the potential for an ECI task force to develop a code of best practice in the management of multicultural project teams.

3. ECI Master Classes 2006
Risk Analysis and Management (this course is now fully booked)
Date: Tuesday 19 September
Venue: Britannia Leeds Bradford Hotel (formerly known as Holiday Inn Leeds/Bradford Airport)
Tutor: Stephen Weatherley, Project Management Consultant, McCourts Projects, ECI UK Director of Operations
Project Development and Definition
Date: Tuesday 03 October
Venue: Manchester Airport
Tutor: Chris Fox, Project Management Consultant
Many studies have been carried out investigating why some projects experience major difficulties and in some cases fail completely. These studies have covered many different types of projects in different business sectors and yet one of the main conclusions repeatedly identified failure in various aspects of the project development work. It is clear that quality of project development and definition is a key factor in determining project outcome and that it is in the development phase that the majority of the key strategy decisions are (or should be) taken. The objectives of this Master Class will be to:
- Highlight how project development has a major influence upon project implementation and project outcome.
- Identify key requirements for the development of engineering projects.
- Propose appropriate methodologies for optimal development of projects.
- Highlight the key roles of the Project Manager and his team in the development phase.
- Identify requirements for input and support from the project owner and other stakeholders.
- Encourage cross fertilization of ideas and experience by ensuring that the session is interactive.
Whole Life Value
Date: Tuesday 7th November
Venue: Leeds
Tutor: Stephen Weatherley, Project Management Consultant, McCourts Projects, ECI UK
Director of Operations
For the last three years, the ECI task force on whole life value has been working together with the RICS, DQI, 'Constructing Excellence', Loughborough University
and Faithful and Gould developing an effective toolkit to measure and evaluate alternative whole life options using a 'balanced scorecard’ approach. This toolkit is now in the final stages of development and is being tested on various public sector projects and in the pharmaceutical industry. It is however widely applicable to other sectors of industry, government and commerce since the principles of whole life value are of universal application.
The value of any proposed investment or purchase is often much more than the initial cost or purchase price. Yet behaviours in industry often show an over-reliance on economic price considerations alone. Although life cycle costing principles recognise that longer term economics must be taken into account if successful investment decisions are to be made, the whole life value model takes this a stage further and seeks to identify and measure other areas of value generation beyond the merely economic. This Masterclass, which is aimed at project managers and senior general managers from clients, contractors, advisors and regulators, will give delegates an understanding of what value is and how it can be created and enhanced on projects. A whole life value model will be described as well as other techniques and practices which will give improved project and business performance.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.
ECI Pricing system for piping works - version 2
ISBN 1 873844 60 3
Since the initial publication in 2002, a number of owners, EPC contractors and construction contractors in our industry have applied the ECI Pricing System for Piping Works successfully on different types of project at various locations. Their contribution in providing comments and suggested improvements is highly appreciated and enabled the ECI Benelux Subcontracting Task Force to prepare this 'Revision 2005' of the system. In addition, a number of modifications were required to better support further automation of the execution work processes that interface with the system.
The system provides a structured approach designed to reduce bidding costs for owners and contractors alike, it includes a spreadsheet with multipliers on a CD-ROM, not a ready-made software package, but simple enough to integrate into any company's existing software.
This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.
A full list of publications available to purchase from ECI can be found on the publications page of the ECI website or contact Anu Khandelwal at the ECI office.
