Taskforce News
Global Safety – Communication is key
The issue of communication on international projects is wider than just language – it’s also one of meaning. We may both understand the same word, but is our understanding the same? There is also the question of different levels of literacy. Many people can read, but the written word is not necessarily the best way of communicating with them. In the course of their field work, the ECI Task Force on Global Safety have come across some ingenious solutions to this and other global safety problems.

Prof Alistair Gibb of Loughborough University and Guido Simon of Fluor will present their conclusions to the ECI Conference “Global Construction 10 years on: Adapting to Change”, 23 and 24 March 2006, Delft, The Netherlands. For more information about the Conference or the Safety, Health and Environment task force please see the ECI website or contact Anu Khandelwal on +44 (0)1509 223526.

3. ECI Master Classes 2006

UK MASTER CLASSES

Managing Your Partnership Effectively
Date: Thurs 9 February
Venue: Manchester Airport, Manchester

Any cooperative venture should deliver a win/win to all parties. All should enjoy a better experience during the life of the project, and there should be no litigation afterwards.

Unfortunately, this does not happen anywhere nearly as often as it should, and this is mainly due to the absence of a strategy of proper engagement – especially from the client.

This Master Class is designed to offer an engagement and behavioural strategy that has worked on very successful projects from the North Sea to Hong Kong, on projects ranging from plant and equipment installation to buildings and major civils construction.

The full 2006 programme is now available on the ECI website at http://www.eci-online.org/masclas.html

For further information and to register for the above master classes please contact Anu Khandelwal at the ECI office on +44 (0) 1509 228797.

HPL 60 – Personal Selling Skills – 11 to 13 January 2006
http://www.eiil.net/mambo/images/stories/Course%20Details/coursedetailshpl60.pdf
A key aspect of the Leader's ability to communicate change, this workshop will use a combination of theory and practice, and the vehicle of selling a product or service, to illustrate the personal persuasion process. From the importance of developing a clear goal and approach, through to ensuring commitment and follow-up, participants will be able to use the learning from this course in a wide range of selling and persuading situations.

SUS 4 - Buying and Selling for Sustainability – 16 to 18 January 2006
http://www.eiil.net/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=36
Can companies ‘buy and sell’ the sustainable message? Does it have a real value or is it simply another cost to be borne by manufacturers? This workshop reinforces the corporate values that have a ‘price’ in the market. It looks at purchasing and public procurement in an environmentally- conscious world and the important relationships between the company and its customers and the consumer.

MCE 20 – Business Lobbying in the European Union – 24 to 26 January 2006

http://www.eiil.net/mambo/images/stories/Course%20Details/coursedetailsmce20.pdf
The objective of this three day workshop is to present in a logical sequence the evolution of the European Union, from the nation states to the Common Market to the EU, and to introduce participants to the major areas of European policies and the EU institutional setup, decision-making and lobbying. The workshop will provide participants with a concise and clear picture of the EU set-up and policies; an understanding of the reasons why the existing EU structures and policies are in place, as a guide to anticipate future developments; an understanding of the EU ways of working (the 'committology') and their impact on business,! and an understanding of the principles and practices of lobbying for business benefit.

All workshops will be held at the European Institute for Industrial Leadership, Chateau Latour de Freins. The chateau is situated in the forest surroundings of Uccle, about 20 mins from the centre of Brussels. For more information please visit www.eiil.net or to register for any of the above events please contact secretariat@eiil.net

Project development and definition handbook
(2005)
ISBN 1 873844 61 1

Effective project definition is a cornerstone of good practice. Engineering and construction projects are important components of business investment processes. Unless projects are properly defined, their chances of success are slim, often posing a significant risk to the overall business.

This ECI manual, written by Chris Fox, will be an essential tool for clients, contractors, advisers and suppliers.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.

ECI Pricing system for piping works - version 2 (2005)
ISBN 1 873844 60 3

Since the initial publication in 2002, a number of owners, EPC contractors and construction contractors in our industry have applied the ECI Pricing System for Piping Works successfully on different types of project at various locations. Their contribution in providing comments and suggested improvements is highly appreciated and enabled the ECI Benelux Subcontracting Task Force to prepare this 'Revision 2005' of the system. In addition, a number of modifications were required to better support further automation of the execution work processes that interface with the system.

The system provides a structured approach designed to reduce bidding costs for owners and contractors alike, it includes a spreadsheet with multipliers on a CD-ROM, not a ready-made software package, but simple enough to integrate into any company's existing software.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.

A full list of publications available to purchase from ECI can be found on the publications page of the ECI website or contact Anu Khandelwal at the ECI office.
