Alistair is the ECI Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of complex project management and is responsible for knowledge creation and best practice assimilation within and on behalf of ECI across the European organisation.
Alistair is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Builder. He joined Loughborough University in 1993 following a career in civil engineering and construction management, especially in complex projects.
He has been closely involved with ECI since the mid-1990s, mainly as Project Director of the Safety, Health & Environment Task Force. Internationally he is coordinator of the Conseil Internationale de Batiment (CIB) working commission on construction health & safety. He has led many health and safety research projects funded both by UK and US Governments and industry. He also has an impressive research track record in technical innovation – particularly in offsite construction. He is a founding member of the influential UK industry body Buildoffsite and has led several overseas trade missions.

James is responsible for overseeing the operational activities of the Institute and implementing its strategy, as agreed by the Executive Board.
James joined ECI, having been Research Manager for Loughborough University’s Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre (IMCRC), before which he was at Ramboll Whitbybird, one of Europe’s leading engineering design consultancies, where he worked on strategy for managing technical knowledge and expertise across the organisation’s engineering disciplines. He has a long-standing relationship with Loughborough University, having also completed his Engineering Doctorate there.
Working closely with the other members of the ECI team, James will drive ECI forward looking to maximise added-value for ECI members by meeting individual members’ needs, and the implementation of ECI initiatives such as workshops, Task Forces and the knowledge repository. A key focus will be to build on the industry networks that exist through ECI and the links with the regional centres in Benelux and Italy, as well as the expansion of ECI’s membership base.

Anu is ECI’s longest standing member of staff and provides a vital role in facilitating the on-going activities of the Institute by conducting ECI’s administration and marketing duties, including the production of ECI workshop, conference and Task Force material, together with the development of ECI’s website and publications. Anu has a background in marketing, design and event management.

Lisa is responsible for managing the contacts database and publications orders. Lisa also provides support in the coordination of ECI events and brings valuable experience to the Institute through her previous role as a Documentation Manager in the pharmaceutical industry.
ECI Consultants
Howard Lawrence
Howard is a freelance Project Management Consultant with over 38 years’ experience in project management and public procurement practice including PPP and Prime Contracting. Howard’s main ECI role is coordinating international relations and the annual ECI conference.
Ed Wilson
Ed has had a distinguished career in the process and energy industries and recently retired from his position as CEO of project management and engineering consultancy CEL, now WSP CEL. Ed is a valued consultant for ECI providing input into on-going ECI activities and initiatives and offering both an operational and strategic perspective.
Clive Winkler
Following some 30 years as a Chartered Engineer, Clive set up as an independent practitioner to promote best practice. Clive is a BIS Benchmark Index accredited facilitator, a Qualified NVQ Assessor and a Construction Best Practice Programme Advisor. Clive supports ECI in coordinating workshops and the alignment of ECI activities with those of the Benelux and Italian regions.
ECI European Executive Board
The European Executive Board is responsible for strategy, operational activities, providing leadership direction, finances and constitutional matters.
Michel Virlogeux, ECI President
Michel is a globally renowned engineer and has designed and built some of the world’s most famous bridges. He is a graduate and a Visiting Professor of the prestigious École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, France.
He has been awarded the ‘Award of Excellence of the Engineering News Record’ (1995), the ‘Gold Medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers’ (1979), the Gold Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers (2005) and the ‘Gustave Magnel Medal’ (1999).
He received the 2003 IABSE Award of Merit in Structural Engineering in recognition of his major contributions leading to very significant progress in the field of civil engineering. Michel has been president of ECI since 2007.
John Oliver, ECI Chairman
John was appointed to his current role as Head of Project Management with BG Group in June 2009. He joined them from the airport operator BAA where he was one of the Project Leaders for Terminal 5 at Heathrow.
During his 25 year career he has delivered major projects in a variety of sectors and has worked for BP, Dynegy and Enron. He has been involved in the origination, development, delivery and assessment of capital projects.
John is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Association for Project Management, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the Energy Institute. In 2009 he was made a member of the Worshipful Company of Engineers, a City of London Livery Company, and is a Freeman of the City of London
