2. ECI Master Classes 2008

UK Master Classes

Risk Analysis & Management Masterclass
Date: Tues 13 May
Venue:
Hilton Hotel, Manchester Airport
Timings: 10.00 - 17.00
Tutor:
Steve Simister, Oxford Management & Research Ltd

The management of risk is inherent to both project and contract managers. It is inherent to project management because projects, being unique, novel and transient, are uncertain and hence risky. It is inherent to contracts because one of the functions of contracts is to share this risk between the parties involved in a project. By the end of the programme the participants will be able to:

  • Describe principles of managing risk, and give examples of standard risk management processes
  • Appreciate the psychology of risk
  • Explain tools and techniques for the qualitative management of risk, linked to standard risk management processes
  • Apply quantitative techniques for risk analysis, including three point estimating and Monte Carlo simulation
Target Audience
The programme is aimed at project and contract engineers who already use risk management but want to take their knowledge and experience to a higher level.

Using ECI ACTIVE principles to ensure project success masterclass

Date: Wed 21 May
Venue: London
Tutor: Charles Botsford, ECI

The ECI ACTIVE Principles are the key to better projects.  They focus on areas of current poor performance and show how these can be improved by adopting better behaviours and practices to the advantage of the entire construction and asset management supply chain.

This Master Class will introduce delegates to the ECI ACTIVE Principles and the Value Enhancing Practices (VEPs) which support them as well as building an understanding of how they can be applied to improve construction projects.  The Master Class will be interactive and will provide opportunity for those attending to share their experience of applying these practices.  Case studies and participative exercises will be used to enhance the learning process to mutual advantage.

Through the Master Class the participants will gain an understanding of:
  1. Why many projects fail to meet customer expectations through poor behaviours and project practices.
  2. What the ECI ACTIVE Principles are and how they can add value.
  3. How the ECI ACTIVE Principles can motivate and enhance project team performance across the supply chain.
  4. How to introduce and implement the ECI ACTIVE Principles on projects.
  5. How to overcome the barriers to implementing the ECI ACTIVE principles and experience the benefits.

This focused one-day course is an essential event for project and engineering managers.

New ECI Safety, Health and Environmental Management Guide - Out now!

This construction project management guide to an Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SHE) Model has been produced by the SHE task force of the European Construction Institute (ECI). It follows international standards such as EN ISO 14001:2004 and EN ISO 9001:2000 and relevant national guidance.

The SHE Management Model provides a goal-setting framework, within which the Project Management Organisation (PMO) can develop detailed policies, standards and procedures and incorporate them within their system. This can be applied from the start to the finish of the project. In addition to a framework, this guide provides exemplars of key procedures and documentation.

This manual is available to purchase from ECI at £40.00 for ECI members and £80.00 for non members. For a limited period only order the new SHE guide and receive a copy of the Total Project Management of Construction Safety, Health & the Environment Edition 2 (RRP £40.00) absolutely free.

To place an order please contact the ECI office by email or telephone +44 (0) 1509 222620.

Highlights from the ECI Annual Conference 2008!

The City of Venice provided a delightful location and backdrop to what turned out to be a very successful conference covering a diverse range of topics with a high quality of presentations. Many delegates also took advantage of completing the Belbin test and receiving a feedback report which they were able to discuss with Meredith Belbin and his team.

Projen and Rail Link Engineering were awarded the Project of the Year award at the gala dinner with CEL International as runners up.

The feedback so far has been very positive and there has been interest expressed by a number of non-member companies in joining ECI as a result of their attendance at the conference and finding out what ECI has to offer.

ECI's next major workshop will be held on 13 November 2008 at the Park Inn Hotel, near Heathrow, London.

ECI Pricing system for piping works - version 2

ISBN 1 873844 60 3

Since the initial publication in 2002, a number of owners, EPC contractors and construction contractors in our industry have applied the ECI Pricing System for Piping Works successfully on different types of project at various locations. Their contribution in providing comments and suggested improvements is highly appreciated and enabled the ECI Benelux Subcontracting Task Force to prepare this 'Revision 2005' of the system. In addition, a number of modifications were required to better support further automation of the execution work processes that interface with the system.

The system provides a structured approach designed to reduce bidding costs for owners and contractors alike, it includes a spreadsheet with multipliers on a CD-ROM, not a ready-made software package, but simple enough to integrate into any company's existing software.

This publication is now available to purchase from the ECI office at £40.00 to members and £60.00 to non-members.

A full list of publications available to purchase from ECI can be found on the publications page of the ECI website or contact Anu Khandelwal at the ECI office.
